Welcome to Lakeland Lime.

We are a small family run business specialising in Handcrafted Lime finishes for traditional buildings and we love what we do.

Discover Lime. . . . .

The use of Lime is traditionally associated with Historic and listed buildings. We have known this for years but recently, there has been a much wider recognition of the sustainable and environmentally friendly assets of this material and a move away from modern cement and chemicals. A number of national organisations responsible for planning applications and provision of advice advocate the use of Lime, particularly on historic buildings. . .

‘Old buildings behave differently from those constructed using modern methods and materials: In order to be able to dry out, traditional solid wall construction requires moisture movement (breathability) throughout, whilst modern cavity walling relies on creating barriers to water ingress/egress’

Lime can be used in a number of ways including pointing, plastering, rendering and lime wash to name a few. The important focus for us is that your building receives the attention to detail it deserves and these methods are preserved and used for many years to come. Without this traditional ethos, we risk much of what makes our historic buildings unique, beautiful and sustainable.

The Lime Revival.

Environmental and Sustainability: The Carbon footprint of Lime is much lower than that of many modern building materials

Structural integrity: Lime is breathable – Where older buildings are constructed from solid walls, the breathability of lime materials can prevent or alleviate damp problems. Lime is also more flexible, allowing for more structural movement and reducing the risk of cracks.

Compatibility: Like most things, old buildings need to be treated with love and understanding to get the best out of them! We advocate for the use of traditional building methods and materials that are compatible with the original construction to repair and maintain your property for years to come.

Aesthetic: Lime finishes have a particular aesthetic which (we feel!) provides buildings with a soft and natural finish, providing a heritage look which is in keeping with original buildings. For those lucky enough to own and care for historic buildings, original materials preserve period details, lifting the overall look of the property.

Planning and Conservation: Authorities will often specify the use of lime mortar for listed buildings and buildings in conservation areas.
